Jakob Klemencic from Slovenia and Gaia Tormena from Italy added another major victory to their careers on Sunday, winning the final round of the UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup in Aalen, Germany. Klemencic’s victory also secured him the overall UCI World Cup title, while Ukraine’s Mariia Sukhopalova wrapped up the women’s overall title.

As always, huge crowds in Aalen cheered the riders all the way to the finish line. The fast and spectacular urban course also provided the stage for the farewell of seven-time UCI World Champion Titouan Perrin-Ganier, who raced his final-ever UCI World Cup round before bringing his eliminator career to an end at next week’s French Championships.

At the start of the day, Tormena already set the tone in the qualifying time trial, beating Germany’s Marion Fromberger and Sukhopalova by less than a second.

In the men’s qualifying time trial, Austrian champion Theo Hauser finished ahead of the two Slovenian favourites, Matic Kranjec Zagar and Klemencic. UCI World Cup leader Kranjec Zagar was eliminated in the hotly contested semi-finals, along with Perrin-Ganier, Sweden’s Edvin Lindh and local hero Simon Gegenheimer.

Lindh eventually claimed fifth place by winning the small final ahead of Kranjec Zagar, Gegenheimer and Perrin-Ganier.

In the women’s category, the big final featured a stellar line-up: six-time UCI World Champion Tormena, UCI World Cup leader Sukhopalova, European champion Adela Pernicka from the Czech Republic and local favourite Fromberger.

Tormena produced a clean run, leading from start to finish to beat Fromberger, Sukhopalova and Pernicka. In the men’s final, Hauser made the best start and led the race until the finishing straight, where Klemencic came past with a powerful sprint.

Hauser had to settle for second place, Jarne Vandersteen from Belgium finished third, while Louis Krauss was fourth for the home country.

Finish line quotes

“I’m feeling super good, in super shape,” UCI World Champion Tormena enjoyed. “I’m very, very happy, especially because I’m back in Aalen. This place is magic. The crowd is special. Even if most of them are here for Marion, the local hero, I really enjoy racing in front of such a loud crowd.” “There’s a lot going through my mind,” Klemencic admitted. “I still can’t believe what I achieved today: another victory here in Aalen, on the most amazing course with the most amazing fans. And the overall title…

that’s amazing.”

With his sprint victory, Klemencic took the overall UCI World Cup title from Kranjec Zagar. In the final standings, Klemencic finished with 245 points, 30 more than his fellow Slovenian.

Hauser completed the overall podium with 201 points. In the women’s category, Mariia Sukhopalova secured the overall title with 270 points. Fromberger finished second with 245, while Didi de Vries from the Netherlands was third with 185.
