For many years, iconic football songs such as Shakira’s Waka Waka and England’s classic Three Lions have been released alongside the FIFA World Cup and the Euro Championships. This inspired SeatPick to study the science behind songs like these to learn what makes them so catchy.

Highlights from the research:

  • Shakira’s Waka Waka (It’s time for Africa) is crowned the catchiest and most danceable football song, scoring 8.4/10 overall for its danceability, energy, 3.3 BILLION YouTube views, and Spotify popularity.
  • An academic study concluded that Billboard chart hits including Waka Waka are catchy due to having repetitive lyrics, which helps us remember them more.
  • In second place is the 2022 World Cup song Hayya Hayya (Better Together) by Trinidad Cardona, scoring 6.9/10 and receiving high danceability and energy scores.
  • Ricky Martin’s La Copa de la Vida is third, with a total score of 6.5/10, again scoring high for danceability and energy, but also for having 78 MILLION YouTube views.
  • Shockingly, Euro 96 classic Three Lions ranks near the bottom at #15 with a final score of 3.4/10. However, it scored 8.7/10 for its energy and has over 42 MILLION YouTube views, meaning itishardly an unpopular track.
