Embrapa investiga surto de viroses e aponta alternativas para produtores de tomate

Nos últimos três anos, um aumento na população de mosca-branca nas regiões produtoras de tomate tem deixado em alerta os produtores, os pesquisadores e técnicos que se dedicam à cultura.

Condições climáticas favoráveis como altas temperaturas e baixa umidade favoreceram a taxa de reprodução dos insetos e, além disso, a alteração no regime de chuvas, como o veranico e a ocorrência de chuvas fortes e concentradas, soma dificuldades no controle da praga.

  
“As viroses transmitidas pela mosca-branca estiveram entre os principais problemas fitossanitários do tomateiro por volta de uma década atrás e estavam sob controle até que, de 2021 em diante, temos observado o aumento das revoadas de moscas-brancas que migram de cultivos de soja em final de ciclo e encontram alimento nas lavouras de tomate recém-plantadas”, contextualiza a pesquisadora Alice Nagata, da área de Virologia da Embrapa Hortaliças (Brasília/DF).

Com esse cenário, desde o ano passado, ficaram mais frequentes os relatos de produtores sobre a ocorrência severa de viroses em lavouras de tomate, que tem ocasionado grandes prejuízos financeiros em estados como Distrito Federal, Goiás, Minas Gerais, São Paulo e Paraná. De acordo com a pesquisadora, quando se olha a paisagem agrícola, a presença da soja por perto piora a situação, a exemplo do que hoje tem se visto na região de Faxinal/PR, um polo importante de produção de tomate em estufa e com economia baseada em cultivo de milho e soja.

Em casos assim, as plantas de soja multiplicam as moscas-brancas e ainda podem hospedar o vírus e contribuir para o agravamento da situação no tomateiro.

Amostras de plantas de tomate com sintomas de infecção viral, coletadas dessa região do Paraná, foram analisadas pela equipe do laboratório de Virologia da Embrapa Hortaliças e, segundo Alice, embora os resultados sejam preliminares, há indícios da importância dos begomovírus e da mosca-branca como inseto-vetor.

“Para um controle eficiente, é preciso que os agricultores e extensionistas estejam aptos a identificar os sintomas da doença na planta para, então, fazer um manejo adequado segundo as recomendações técnico-científicas”, esclarece.

O uso de cultivares com algum nível de resistência às viroses é uma das medidas de controle possíveis, pois ainda que as plantas sejam infectadas há possibilidade de não comprometer completamente a produção.

Como as viroses transmitidas por mosca-branca não estavam sendo um problema predominante até os últimos anos, os produtores vinham privilegiando o plantio de cultivares com outras características, como maior produtividade e, com isso, quando houve o surto de mosca-branca, não havia pronta oferta no mercado de sementes com resistência a viroses associadas ao vetor. 

Sintomas e recomendações

A publicação “Guia para Identificação de Pragas do Tomateiro” traz informações sobre ciclo de vida e características das pragas que afetam cultivos de tomate, bem como sobre os sintomas e os danos ocasionados nas plantas em decorrência das infestações. 

Segundo o documento, no caso da mosca-branca, as toxinas injetadas no processo de sucção da seiva reduzem o vigor da planta e causam anomalias nos frutos como amadurecimento irregular e polpa descolorida e sem sabor – o que é conhecido como isoporização da polpa.

Além disso, pode ocorrer a formação de fumagina nas folhas e nos frutos e, em infestações muito graves, pode haver murcha e morte de mudas e plantas jovens, ou nanismo e redução da floração.

Para consultar as medidas de controle da mosca-branca e suas viroses associadas, a publicação “Guia para o Reconhecimento e Manejo da Mosca-branca, da Geminivirose e da Crinivirose na Cultura do Tomateiro” detalha como obter bons resultados por meio do manejo integrado de pragas, que envolve várias medidas de controle, não somente controle químico e uso de cultivares resistentes, sendo todas medidas igualmente importantes para um controle eficaz.  

Reunião Técnica

Devido à relevância das viroses associadas à mosca-branca nos plantios de tomate do Paraná, a pesquisadora Alice Nagata participa, na quinta-feira (13), de uma reunião técnica promovida pelo Instituto de Desenvolvimento Rural do Paraná (IDR-Paraná).

Ela irá falar sobre o panorama de viroses do tomateiro no Brasil para os extensionistas que atuam na área de olericultura.

O evento tem o objetivo de atualizar os técnicos sobre as medidas para prevenção e manejo de viroses na cultura do tomate e irá contar com palestras de diferentes especialistas do instituto sobre temáticas como: panorama da cultura do tomate no Paraná, resultados de detecção e identificação de viroses na cultura do tomate na região de Faxinal, insetos vetores de vírus em tomate, e aspectos legais e programa de sanidade da cultura do tomate – apresentados pela Agência de Defesa Agropecuária do Paraná (ADAPAR).
